About West of Annestown on the Copper Coast in County Waterford, near Boatstrand is the beautiful Dunabratton Head and its promontory fort which is accessible from the scenic walk.

The road then sweeps down dramatically to Kilmoran Cove and back up again towards Bunmahon passing the ruin of the Cornish Engine House at Tankardstown.

During the last century this engine pumped the local copper mines to a depth of 400 meters.

The flue coming from it to the surviving chimney also emerged for the first time.

Within the pumping engine house three quarters of the massive granite stone on which the engine was mounted were found as well as the crawl-tunnel used for boltingit down.

Biggest surprises of all came from the insignificant-looking remains of thewinding engine.

Its internal arrangements are at present a bit of an enigma, but its boiler house to the south makes sense as does the pit and fly-wheelon the other side though other expertise will be needed to explain some of the features.
