The film "The Quiet Man" starring John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara and Barry Fitzgerald was set in the west of Ireland and filmed mainly in Cong.
It probably had more influence on the development of the Irish tourist industry than any promotion ever undertaken by the Irish Tourism authorities in their history.
The film, made in 1952, won the Oscar in the Best Director Award for John Ford and projected a fairytale and beautifully enchanting image of Ireland that lasts to this day with many Americans.
