The Killala Round Tower is 25 meters high and is all that remains of an early monastery founded by St Patrick in the 5th century.
The monastery and the outbuildings that comprised the settlement were the foundation of the town of Killala, more associated with the 1798 Rising and the arrival of French forces in the town.
Killala Round Tower is located in the centre of the town of Killala in north Mayo, some 10 kilometres from Ballina.
A fine round tower, still in perfect preservation, it demonstrates the ancient celebrity of the place as an ecclesiastical centre and is a supreme indicator the great achievements of St.
Patrick and his followers in the north Mayo area during their time there.
