About
Lough Ree is a lake in the midlands of Ireland, the second of the three major lakes on the River Shannon.
It touches most Longford and Westmeath on the eastern side and County Roscommon the western side.
The lake is popular for fishing and boating.
The lake supports a small commercial eel fishery and is locally famous for its eels on wheels truck.
In the centre of the lake is Quaker Island, named after a Quaker settlement was etablished there in 17th century.
Just across from Quaker Island on Lough Ree with its renowned antiquarian remains lies the secluded Barley Harbour.
The Harbour itself has been considerably reconstructed and with adjoining Elfeet Bay is one of the most attractive locations on Lough Ree.
