Bruree is a small village located in south County Limerick, near the towns of Kilmallock and Charleville (Cork).
Bruree is famous as the childhood home of Eamon de Valera and is a picturesque village that has won awards for its tidiness.
Eamon de Valera was born in the USA, the son of a Spanish emigrant father and an Irish mother who left his mother soon after de Valeras birth and an Irish mother.
His mother took him back to the area where her family were originally from in his infancy and he was brought up in Bruree, Co.
Limerick.
The obscurity of his origins and his aloof personality lent him a powerful mystique which he was not slow to exploit.
The village was once an important seat of the kings of Munster and Bruee is now a thriving village on the banks of the rushing River Maigue.
The de Valera Museum and Bruree Heritage Center gives detailed information about the area and about the man himself.
