St Hugh’s Sweathouse - County Leitrim
Not far from the St Hugh’s Well down the path and across the bridge you will find a sweat house which is built into the back of the stream. The Sweat House was built with stonewalls and used to be heated with a turf fire inside. Approximately six hours later the fire would be raked out, the floor would be lined with rushes and water would be sprinkled over them to create steam. Two people could crawl inside and the cleansing process would begin. They could then bathe in the nearby stream.
