The 200 ft high Rock of Dunamase is the superb site of a dun or fort occupied by a Leinster. Chieftain in early Christian times. This stronghold was later acquired by Strongbow through his marriage to Eva MacMoroughh, and a motte and bailey castle subsequently erected here was enlarged and strengthened around 1250.
