A Guide to Westport

Westport is one of the most beautiful and cosmopolitan towns on the island of Ireland. Located in the southeast corner of Clew Bay, 18 kilometres west of Castlebar, Westport has a gracious town centre designed delicate Georgian format by James Wyatt in 1780. It was the first architecturally designed town in Ireland and benefits greatly from the imagination of Wyatt. Westport is a major tourist draw with visitors coming for the magnificent scenery of the area, and the proximity to Connemara, Achill, Clew Bay and Croagh Patrick. The famous pilgrimage mountain of Croagh Patrick, known locally as "the Reek" is just west of here. Westport is a superb base for exploring Connemara from the North and has many amenities and facilities to occupy the visitor. Golf, angling, walking, a small zoo and adventure Park in Westport House, numerous great pubs and restaurants and a whole range of top-class accommodation together with good transport infrastructure, make Westport a perfect holiday destination.
