South East Region
The South East Region of tourism in Ireland is comprised of County Carlow, County Kilkenny, South Tipperary, County Waterford and County Wexford. Waterford is Ireland’s oldest city and home to the world famous Waterford Crystal. It is also the meeting point of the Three Sisters Rivers, the Suir , the Nore and the Barrow
Wexford hosts its renowned Opera Festival each year and is treasure trove of exceptional beaches and holiday resorts right around its entire coastline. The county is noted as a weekend bolthole for Dubliners and the revenue that the county generates from this business is huge.
Kilkenny City has the famous Kilkenny Castle, which is up there with Edinburgh Castle, the Tower of London and Mad King Ludwig’s castle in Bavaria. The Long Gallery houses an extensive collection of portraits of the Butlers who have lived in the castle since 1391 until they donated the magnificent to the Irish nation in 1965. The Butlers are believed to be ancestors of Diana, Princess of Wales.
Carlow Town is capital of County Carlow, the second smallest county by area in the 32 counties. Carlow is wonderful walking and hiking territory and the River Barrow is a beautiful amenity, which you can navigate by cruiser. The ancient village of St Mullins is worth a visit in the south of the county.
South Tipperary offers probably the best walking territory in Ireland with a number of mountain ranges. Clonmel is the capital of south Tipperary and is a thriving, modern town with a good industrial base and lively social scene. The town of Cahir further south is smaller but very attractive. Either makes a great base from which to explore the rest of the region.
Experience a wonderful holiday you will never forget with the sunniest climate in Ireland (a proven meteorological fact), unique heritage, and a scenic landscape that is a natural playground for an activity based holiday.
A great family holiday destination, Ireland’s South East offers cities and beaches, countryside and culture.
Plan a trip to Waterford and Wexford’s coast resorts and explore the attractions and sights of Tipperary, Kilkenny and Carlow. You won’t be stuck for anywhere to stay!
