Adare Manor Hotel and Golf Resort, Limerick Ireland
The Adare Golf Club is an 18 hole championship golf course which opened in 1995 and is set on the 840 acre estate of Adare Manor Hotel & Golf Resort in Co. Limerick, Ireland. This was the last major golf course designed by the legendary Robert Trent Jones, Senior. This majestic design has gained international acclaim as one of his finest creations.
Situated only 35 miles from Shannon Airport, the Adare Golf Club measures 7,453 yards and is a wonderful test of golf.
Set in 230 acres of lush Irish countryside, the exquisite parkland atmosphere of the demesne has been preserved with the course set amid magnificent mature trees.
The course contains many aquatic features including a 14 acre lake anchoring the front nine holes. The River Maigue meanders through the entire golf course creating a sense of beauty and challenge.
The course was the setting for the Irish Open in 2006, 2007 and 2008.
The 2008 Irish Open really had it all, with record crowds, stunning weather and a much deserved victor who truly put the River Maigue on the world stage with an unscheduled dip that was seen the world over. Englishman Richard Finch was consistency personified as he followed two solid opening rounds with some majestic play on both Saturday and Sunday to finish on -10 under par and go home with the winner’s cheque of €416,660 ahead of Felipe Aguilar who finished two back on -8. A loss of balance as he played his approach to the final hole resulted in Finch taking a fall into the River Maigue which was greeted by smiles all around and a rush of photographers looking to capture the moment for prosperity.
A crowd of just fewer than 65,000 came through the gates of Adare Manor over the four days play and were treated to blue skies, high temperatures and a celebration of golf that included not only 31 eagles but also a hole in one. As in 2007, the event’s success can once again be put down to the combination of the respectful, enthusiastic and knowledgeable galleries, the superb support of the Proud Partners & Official Sponsors and the enthusiasm amongst the players themselves for the Irish Open as an event. Our congratulations go to Richard Finch and to all those who made 2008, an Irish Open to remember.
Finch’s third shot on the final day of the Irish Open 2008 at the 18th hole was voted The European Shot for the Month of May.
