Mullingar Golf Course

Mullingar Golf Club, Belvedere, Mullingar, Co.Westmeath

The Mullingar Course at Belvedere on the outskirts of town is the work of famous Scottish designer James Braid. Although some 'cosmetic' changes have been made since its creation in 1935 Mullingar is essentially as its designer intended, a championship challenge set in old wooded and delightfully undulating parklands.

The course runs to 6458 yards with a classic par 72 balance of 10 par4's, 4 par 5's and 4 par3's evenly distributed over both out and inward 9's. It's routing is player friendly, returning to the club house at 4, 7, and 10 giving opportunities to restock as required.

All four par 3 's are feature holes, but the 182 yard second in particular, with its elevated tee and green is considered one of the toughest one shotters in Irish golf.

The Mullingar Scratch Trophy has featured in the lives of most of the current crop of Irish Tour players. Clarke won here in 1989, McGinley in 1991, Harrington in 1994, and Murphy in 1995. Presidents Cup Ireland team member Athlone's Colm Moriarty won in 2001 thus continuing Mullingar's association with Irish golf at its highest level.

In the last number of years the cup has been won by current Irish Tour Player Rory McIiroy and last year by Shane Lowry. The 2009 competition will return to its usual slot on August Bank holiday Sun and Mon.
