Founded in the late 5th century by Saint Buithe, just north of Drogheda in County Louth lie the ruins of Monasterboice which was an early christian settlement.

It consists of a round tower that is about 35-metres tall, and is in very good condition, although it is not possible to go inside.

There is also the 5.5-metre Muiredach’s High Cross is regarded as the finest high cross in the whole of Ireland. It is named after an abbot, Muiredach mac Domhnaill, who died in 923.

Carved into the cross are biblical carvings of both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible. The first image on the east side of the cross is Adam & Eve while the last image on the west side is Christ being arrested.

There are other crosses called The North and West crosses in the grounds and are even taller but these have suffered much more from the effects of the weather.
