The canal is perhaps one of the most valuable and attractive amenities in Westmeath where the relevant authorities seemed to have spent time and money making it very attractive for the user and the walker.
The efforts put into beautifying the canal banks in the urban areas to very good effect.
You have to travel the canal, enjoy its calmness and serenity, observe the wizened face of a lock-keeper whose family may have been in residence for generations, and ultimately reflect in disbelief that all this is man-made.
There are 46 locks on the entire canal but for any reasonable size of craft it is only navigable as far as Mullingar.
Kinnegad, Killucan, and Ballynacargy are lovely, manicured lock points.
