Lockes Distillery produces the only examples of what used to be a widespread Irish industry.
First licensed in 1757, Lockes produced triple distilled Irish whiskey for over 200 years.
There is a superb Visitor Centre and highly informative guided tours that bring you around the original distillery buildings.
You can trace the process from the grinding of the grain to the casking of the final proofed product and watch and listen as the 19th century water wheel drives the machinery.
Nearly all of the original machinery has now been restored by craftsmen and engineers and to their tribute, can be seen working daily.
In the Visitor Centre you can learn about the lives and the working conditions of the people who worked there during the last 200 years.
Lockes Distillery is now owned by the only independent whiskey producer left in Ireland, Cooley Distillery in County Louth.
Do not pass Kilbeggan without taking in this wonderful attraction.
