The largest town on the Peninsula itself is Belmullet with a population of about 2,000.

The town was founded in 1825 by a local landlord, William Henry Carter.

Two of Irelands finest beaches are located on the Mullet Peninsula, called Mullaghroe and Elly.

Belmullet town is the gateway to the scenic Mullet Peninsula of Erris - an area of North Mayo rich in folklore, tradition, history and culture.

Belmullet is a thriving progressive town with many new developments and amenities, not least of which is the famous Carne golf links located against the backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean.

Famous also for its fishing lakes, rivers and sea-angling off Broadhaven Bay, Belmullet is a popular and picturesque holiday destination, particularly in mid-August when it has its annual 'Fair Day' to welcome home its many emigrants and visitors from all parts of the globe.
