Woodfield, Clonakilty is famous as being the birthplace of Michael Collins and a statue in his honour stands in the town square, unveiled in 2002 by actor Liam Neeson who played him in the film of the same name.
There is comprehensive information about Collins and the town in the local museum which will also arrange walking tours.
Clonakilty offers much more than history though.
In 2007 the town won the Best Emerging Rural Tourist Destination.
Glorious pubs and restaurants complement the varied activities and attractions that hold the visitor.
The town has a beautiful and unique Model Railway village.
A visit to beaches is only minutes away and the town is a superb base for walking trails.
There are two golf courses in the town, one of which adjoins the stunning Lisalen Gardens allowing a compromise between golfer and non-golfing partner.
