Name Clonmore Monastic Site County Carlow Nearest Town Tullow Access Road R728 About In the northeast of Carlow, close to the Kildare and Wicklow borders, lies the small village of Clonmore.

It is worthy of a stop and is recommended for the visitor with an interest in the heritage of Ireland.

This has been recognised by the establishment of a Heritage Tour encompassing the main attractions, including Clonmore Castle and monastic settlement which was founded in all probability by St Mogue in the 6th century.

Little records exist of the castle, but from expert examination it is concluded that it was constructed towards the end of the 13th century.

Clonmore Castle featured in many wars throughout its existence including capture by Cromwells forces in 1650.
